Do you remember how you learned about the world without traveling when you were young? For many persons, Weekly Readers provided the opportunity to see and learn about the world through pictures and short stories. Weekly Reader serves as a children's newspaper, history and geography book.
Three other teachers and I work in an urban public school with a total of 40 at risk and delayed preschoolers.
Many of the children that I work with have parents and grandparents who have never traveled out of the state. The preschoolers are so inquisitive, curious and excited about learning new things about the world they live in.
Last year someone graciously supported our endeavors by purchasing Weekly Readers for our children. This allowed the children to take home Weekly Readers after they read them in school. The children were so excited to learn new words and about new places and events. Many of the parents and caregivers told me how much they enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening to their child tell them about what they learned at school while discussing the Weekly Readers.
My Project
Many of our children hear adults and the television talk about current events, places and people. The preschool Weekly Reader allows the children to understand the world, events and talk that may surround them. The children seem to pick up the names and vocabulary of their world after looking at the pictures and listening to the simple explanation that Weekly Reader gives.
The Weekly Reader also helps the children to learn new vocabulary words. Studies have shown how children considered at risk come to school knowing far less words than children the same age from families that have better incomes.
Your donations will make such as difference because it will help these 40 children learn new vocabulary words and understand the world around them in simple turns.
It will also help some of them see things outside of their city world. Please help introduce them to the world weekly through Weekly Reader.
