My students need current reading material they can take home to share with their families, as well as to practice the skills we are working on in class. They need Scholastic News.
Do you remember getting a magazine as a child? It encouraged reading as you looked through the colorful pages. I want my students to be excited about having their own magazine to read.
Our school is in a rural area.
We have a low socioeconomic background, and many students need the enrichment of new books and magazines at home. By using the Scholastic News Magazine in our class, we can read, discuss, and write about topics that are of interest to the students. This will encourage them to share what they have learned with their families.
My Project
I plan on using the magazine during class time for reading and writing practice, as well as for discussion on topics found in each issue. After we have finished our classroom discussion, I would like to have the students share what they have learned with their families, and encourage discussions at home.
By having current and fresh material to use, I feel it will encourage reading, both at school and at home.
Additionally, my students will gain a broader sense of the world and their place in it.
