My Students

What can I do to get our 3rd grade students excited about reading nonfiction? One way to do this is to provide them with a subscription to the Weekly Reader Magazine. During the past school year, we had sets of these magazine available for students and they loved reading them.

Our Title I school consists of approximately 650 students in grades K-5.

Students come from a variety of backgrounds and are eager to learn. They receive differentiated instruction from highly qualified teachers who strive to meet their diverse needs. The school is located in an inner city community in the state of Virginia and has a very transient population of students. I teach with a team of five teachers to serve approximately 120 third grade students.

My Project

We need 36 copies of Weekly Reader Magazines for our upcoming group of third grade students. This will allow them to have exposure to nonfiction reading. I need a resource that captures the attention of students and encourages them to read nonfiction. Students will learn how to read graphic organizers and strengthen their comprehension skills. Teachers will be able to provide instruction of nonfiction in whole group, small group, and one-to-one meeting with students. Students will engage in discussions about what they read and work on projects with their classmates that connect to topics in the magazine. This subscription will give us online access to the Digital Edition of this magazine. This will especially benefit struggling readers because it has a read aloud version of the magazine. Students will become more fluent readers and be prepared for end of year testing that includes nonfiction in a similar format as this magazine provides.

Your generous support of this project will make it possible for third grade students to become more fluent readers of nonfiction and help them develop reading strategies to prepare them for success on mandated tests.

Students will have an engaging weekly magazine to read that is age appropriate. You will make it possible for students to increase their literacy and be successful students. I greatly appreciate your support of this project!
