Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember writing your first sentence to tell a story? How about listening avidly to a book being read aloud? For many of my students, they will experience both for the first time in preschool. Help us make this a reality by giving them a love of reading and writing through wonderful materials.
My students represent a diverse ethnic and socio-economic population that is urban.
As city kids, I like to give them as many opportunities to increase their background knowledge of the world around them as possible. Reading classic children's literature and having them model their own writing on particular mentor author styles helps them to gain confidence, both as readers and writers.
My Project
Putting classic big books in front of students and immersing them in the images and words draws them in and makes them more likely to develop a life-long love of reading. By the same token, putting writing materials that they love in their hands inspires them to become writers and empowers them as they develop the skills to express themselves.
Providing big books opens many doors to early childhood students--it gives them the words and pictures that build comprehension, and makes them eager to read on.
Giving them the proper tools for writing at an early age motivates them to produce a written or illustrated product that is an expression of themselves.
