This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of an urban 9-12 secondary school in California. My over arching literary objectives are to improve my students' literacy scores on standardized tests (currently 71% have not yet demonstrated mastery on the Reading portion of our state's yearly assessment), bolster their reading fluency and comprehension, and inspire them to become life-long readers. Many of my students are already voracious readers and I want to continue to nourish their zeal. However, others do not enjoy reading and/or struggle with it. It is my hope that continuing to stock the school library with compelling, user-friendly, relevant books will encourage those who detest and/or have difficulty with reading to pick up a book as well as those who have already discovered the magic of written words.

My Project

Every week our high school library hosts a book club on Wednesdays at lunch. Teens of all reading ilks stream into the library to discuss novels with their literary group---some are voracious bibliophiles; some despise the written word and come only for the free cookies (they tell me). Some are lonely and seek social camaraderie; some struggle with literacy and want to improve. And some are kidnapped by well-meaning friends.

All in all, our motley crew of library patrons meet each week to talk about books and find solidarity through literature.

However, in order to ensure that this program continues to thrive, I need to be able to provide thrilling novels to enchant my book lovers and entice my reluctant readers.
