My students need a class timer, a class set of smaller student timers to help students learn to be independent and on task, a set of headphones for our computer centers and a game to encourage reading comprehension of nonfiction reading passages.
We would be a lot GREATER if - we had the tools to teach us to become more independent in a positive and safe environment, so that one day we could build our community back up to what we know it should be.
The students in my room primarily come from a high-need community. A community that was once strong and booming has taken a turn and could use a boost up. Who better to start with than our children? Most of the children are self-dependent at home and do not have the support that their parents wish they could give because they are pulled in so many different directions just to keep their family afloat. I would like to give my students the tools necessary to support them in their education and to help them become responsible and caring citizens.
By providing my students with tools as simple as timers my students will gain a firmer understanding of the importance of time management both in their education and in their home lives. Many of these students do not have the luxury of computer use outside of school, but providing them with headphones I may be able to give them more time using them for educational purposes while not interfering with the education of their peers. Due to the pressure of state testing and their responsibilities in and out of school these students need more exposure to nonfiction reading and who wouldn't enjoy learning about nonfiction by playing Plinko?
By supporting the students in my class you are supporting an entire community. Please help me to help them grow the new roots that we so need so very badly.
