When I tell my art classes that we are going to be weaving I get cheers of excitement and student applause from the class. seriously my students clap for weaving. I teach elementary art in a struggling city public school. I'm always surprised at just how popular weaving is with my students, it is by far one the most popular lessons I teach nearly everybody seems to love weaving. Every grade I teach does weaving form 5th grade and down to even Kindergarten. Its fun to see the student progress over the year. The Kinder weaving is small and very simple, but at each grade level I like to make weaving a little more complicated introducing new types of weaves every years. by the time they get to 5th grade these kids are master weavers. I have had many students win awards for Thier weaving at the citywide student art show.
I teach weaving using a cardboard loom. I make the looms using old corrugated cardboard from boxes around the school ( from the lunch room or boxes that had other school supplies in them) it makes a great loom for weaving. Getting a hold of cardboard is easy, but yarn not so easy.
Weaving uses up a lot of yarn some years I'm able to buy yarn with money from the school, but most of the time I find my self spending my my own money to get yarn. Some colors are more popular than others. We are always running out of red, yellow, pink and they love this bright gold color . The warp string I prefer to use is made just for weaving something I to order from art catalog I have tried other strings but the warp is so much better. I also like warp to be different colors. Different color warp makes teaching weaving easier for kindergarten and first grade.
Every culture in the world has done weaving. Weaving exposes my students art other than drawing and painting. I find weaving gives many of my students something they can be successful at doing. I know that most of my students will not become artist but I feel it is important to expose them to as many Different types of art as possible. Weaving is one those things I enjoy exposing my students to. When ever I see former students weaving is among the things they remember most about art class.
