My Students
What is the fabric of a community? What threads connect us from country to country? How does weaving reflect our culture and other cultures? These are questions that I want my students to experience first hand through a year long study of fibers and weaving around the world.
My students are first generation immigrants who face many challenges through language and culture.
The third grade curriculum allows the richness of many cultures to become part of our learning through our study of continents. Weaving and fiber is an important part of culture and the resources requested to do this project will allow my students to learn hands-on about the many diverse fibers, fabrics, and uses of fiber to cloth in cultures around the world.
My Project
I am a spinner and weaver who has never bridged the gap between home and school with my love of fiber. I want to have the opportunity to share with my students the many fibers, the source of these fibers, and culturally important woven products that are produced by learning about it through videos, hands-on opportunities, and documentation of this process.
I have created a website that links videos of different cultures but it is very important that it becomes real for my students by having the tools to learn about some of the fibers and the creation of woven products. The looms and yarn that I am requesting will allow students to explore different types of weaving in a hands-on approach. The silk worm kit and farm will help me to show the process of how silk is created in China through the life cycle and harvesting of the silkworm. Lastly the flip camera will give students the opportunity to document their learning process.
This journey around the world with weaving is both connecting my students to their world but also having the opportunity to share what they learn.
Our website currently contains what other people are doing, but it will evolve with the learning that this project can provide my students. My students will not only learn, but create and share their learning on our website. They will be part of the fabric of a greater community beyond our classroom.
