Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 32 students are Spanish dual language fifth graders and are eager to learn and continue reaching the goal of biliteracy. Most of my students are English language learners, and have different academic needs. We are located in Highland Park, CA in the 2nd largest district in the country (LAUSD). Our school has more Dual Spanish classrooms than Structured English Immersion classrooms.
In 2016 people voted to have more immersion programs and for the expansion of teaching languages therefore now we see the growth of our Dual program.
In the Global CA 2030 initiative the goal is that by 2030, half of all K–12 students will participate in programs leading to proficiency in two or MORE languages. Our dual program begins in kindergarten and continues to 5th grade. In my 20 years of teaching I have seen the value of our dual language program because it is amazing to see students becoming not only bilingual but multilingual.
My Project
We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage month and the students are learning about folk art from the Huichol, the native people of Mexico. Every year I teach the kids to weave an "ojo de dios" or God's eye.
I feel it is more important now during virtual learning for kids to have hands on practice creating a piece of art that also relaxes them.
We will use 5 different colors of yarn to represent the 5 years of the child's life as the Huichol legend says. The children will create a basic "ojo" and then create a bigger more complex mandala using the yarn. At the end of October the children will share their ojo and mandala.
