This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, my philosophy is " the arts may not change the world, but they can change the people who can change the world." I want my students to experience all of the different aspects of visual arts, so that they can be ready to help shape our world.

I am an art teacher in a Chicago Public School with 1200 students in a building built for 500.

We are bursting at the seams, but love our school. Most of our students are at or below the poverty level, and live some very challenging lives. We are constantly fighting the lure of gang involvement. My funds for 40 art classes are stretched very thin.

My Project

The meager funds that I receive, go for the basics; paper, crayons, markers. A "community" stand up loom is a luxury item that my funds can't cover. With this loom and yarn, my students will learn how to work together as a community. They will learn the historical and artistic significance of weaving, as well as cultural and personal connections. They will be able to create a piece of artwork that is "bigger" than themselves, to feel part of a group. Having the weaving displayed, they will be able to return to our school in years to come and know that they helped to create it and were part of the final piece.
