Weave Us Together - Early Childhood Special Education Class

My Students

Weave, weave, weave us together! My early childhood special education class will be working together to produce a classroom tapestry on a large, shared loom. By working together, we will build our community in a new classroom.

Our school is located in a high-poverty, high-crime area and close to 85% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged.

This is our first year in a newly re-designed early childhood center, and our school is experimenting with innovative approaches to education. My special needs preschool and kindergarten-aged students have been identified as having developmental delays. My classroom can include students with a variety of impairments, including Down syndrome, autism, intellectual disability, visual, hearing, or orthopedic impairments, specific learning disability, medical concerns, and more. They attend a public early childhood school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I am very excited about the new methods that our administrators are encouraging in our classrooms.

My Project

We plan to use The Friendly Loom to incorporate weaving in our classroom. Our newly re-designed school has adopted many ideas from the Reggio Emilia approach, which is based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment. (If you are interested, the Reggio Emilia approach is a wonderful thing to study and learn from.) We will draw on this inspiration to allow the students to develop their own natural interests within a community-centered culture. Having a large tapestry loom to share at child-level will allow my preschool and kindergarten-aged students to learn new skills together and work together as a learning community.

My plan is for the loom to be available throughout the day as something for the students to explore together.

The loom will give them the opportunity to explore by touching, moving, seeing, and doing. As students work individually or in collaboration at the loom, they will be contributing to a classroom tapestry to build our new community, quite literally and figuratively weaving us together.
