Art is not just about drawing and painting! We have had 6 years of success with our "Crochet a Coral Reef" club, and the students are eager to learn new skills. We would like to work with all the students in the school to create woven art that will last for generations.
We are a middle school with 750 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.
We house the district multi-needs classroom, so our students have a very wide range of skills. The students are eager learners and willing to try new projects, they just need the tools to make that happen. We are a suburban school housed in a building built in 1950. There are lots of trophies from sports events and temporary bulletin boards, but we envision a tapestry that all the students of every ability level from one grade can help create. The tapestry would be on permanent display as a reflection of their spirit and individuality. Each year another tapestry would be added, highlighting the efforts of all the students.
My Project
Our crochet club has lots of yarn, but we need looms to make a tapestry. We want the artwork to last and to be large enough to be seen, and the table looms are the perfect size. The looms would move around the school from class to class so that each student can contribute. The table looms are sturdy enough to be used by everyone, and small enough to be moved. Weaving is a relatively simple process, and it can utilize a wide range of fabrics, making it a great project for all the students.
How do you feel when you see something you handmade displayed?
Most students art work is on temporary display, eventually going home to live on the refrigerator or in a box. The tapestries created through this project will be here at the middle school for many years to come. We hope to display them in the library to start, then eventually around the school as we make more. Each tapestry will be a unique reflection of the students who made it.
