Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world. Working in one of the last large schools (over 4000 students) in NY, I've always had to work hard to keep students engaged in subject material. So frequently, the texts and workbooks we use have contrived examples, and so-called real world situations which have no bearing on the lives of my students. Students who tune out stop dreaming of continuing their education in college. One way to make education and mathematics relevant is to use data drawn from the world the students experience. My proposal is for a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station. This equipment collects data on temperature and humidity, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction. Its wireless sensors have enough range to transmit the data from the school roof all the way down to my basement classrooms. The WeatherLink data logger and software collects and organizes the data on a computer for distribution to the students. I think this data will prove much more interesting to the students than the often lame examples provided by textbook authors. I want to be able to reach all students, and I am exploring different ways to keep them engaged. Working with REAL data in REAL situations will help them in so many ways. My overall objective is to help all my students meet and exceed state standards, and to prepare them for college. Your generous contribution will help keep the students attentive, and consequently will help me achieve my objectives. Thank you very much for considering this proposal.
