My students need thermometers and physical measurement instruments for direct contact with nature and daily opportunities to practice scientific observations and data collection.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember going outside during the school day? My students enjoy being outdoors during class too.
My students are 11 and 12 years old children who are eager to touch and manipulate items, especially when those items are scientific instruments.
Many come from low income families with resources. Some struggle with reading and learn best through hands on lessons. Our school is the largest middle school in our town, serving 1400 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
My Project
Many of my students do not have experience collecting data, especially outdoors. Reading thermometers, rain gauges, and pH meters are simple instruments that my students will be able to use and to develop their measuring, observation, and data collecting skills.
The data my students collect will be shared with GLOBE, an organization that monitors weather data from around the world.
This provides my students with another opportunity to feel and act like real scientists and makes science relevant to them.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
