This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher for Leslie Stemmons Elementary School in Dallas, Texas. We are a title one school and I teach k-6 (900+ students). Last year we had an event called Field Day, an activity that takes place during the last few days of school where each class competes against other classes in events like tug-of-war, 50 yard dash, relay races, potato sac race. Each classroom chooses a color for their field day team and on field day they are supposed to wear a t-shirt of the color that they choose for their team. I thought there had to be a more creative way to belong to their team on field day. So I thought we could make our own shirts for this special day. If each student brings a plain white t-shirt and I can get the supplies donated by a generous individual, then this could work. I would like for 6th grade to experience tie-dye and I know they can handle using the materials. For the lower grades (3-5) I would have them draw with fabric marker directly on their t-shirts. For the little ones (K-2) I would have them create their t-shirt with fabric crayons. First drawing the image onto paper and I will transfer the drawing on the t-shirt with a hot iron. I know each grade will love creating their t-shirts and this article of clothing will be one that the parents and children cherish for the rest of their lives.
