I am a student in a leadership class titled, S.P.I.R.I.T. We are a very diverse group of students at a public school who work together to identify and resolve problems on our campus. Our class includes sophomores to seniors, as well as second semester freshmen. As young leaders we are learning essential life skills that will help us prepare for college, gain college admittance, succeed in college, and then go onto become community leaders. Each of us facilitates the resolution of one problem per semester. For example, I am currently working on encouraging students to read during the allotted 20 minutes for Sustained Silent Reading (SSR).
As leadership students on campus, we host events (for example: Cultural Food Fair, Anti-Defamation League Training, and Denim Day: a sexual assault prevention day). We also provide services that require resources and materials. Unfortunately, we are not provided with the materials that we need, and we have no funding for our events. We simply have no money to get the resources that we need. If we obtain the needed supplies, we could reach more students and make a larger impact. Unfortunately, many families are unable to financially contribute to our school. Currently, 42% of our student population receives free/reduced lunch tickets and we have a considerable amount of students attending this school from less-fortunate (inner cities) areas and commute to our school each day.
Unfortunately, we are not provided with any funding to purchase new, interesting, and meaningful books. We would like to read the book, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Twenty-five books is the amount needed for one semester in a two-semester school year. We would be re-using the supplies over the time the supplies last (for a long while of course). Also, one read-along CD of the book would be much appreciated. With one CD, we could sit together, read, listen, and discuss the story together as a group. We chose this book because we have not learned much about Afghan citizens. Today, when we hear, “Afghan,” the majority of us think of war and terrorism. We would like to learn more about this culture and its people.
With your help, we can really move forward in our quest to learn about others. The students at our school have been exposed to “the same old topics.” We have gone over and understood these topics; we are now looking to expand our knowledge base! We could use these materials to learn about a variety of problems faced worldwide while improving our literary skills. After we have read the books we will pass on the novels and other materials to the next class, so that the materials can be used for years to come!
Our knowledge is in your (the donor) hands. We are depending on you to help improve one of the many concerns brought up at our school. Thank you very much for your consideration, and any donation would be greatly appreciated!
