This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students hail from a small community, tucked away between factories and wilderness, on Chicago's southeast side. They come from different backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is the fact that their families want them to do their best in school.

I want to create an environment where my students feel safe and welcome to ensure that they are eager to come to school.

Kindergarten is a grade where some students still feel nervous about leaving their parents and the high expectations set for them, but I want to make their learning experience so fun they can't wait to come back the next day.

My Project

Our school recently implemented a behavior management tool which allows students to earn points for demonstrating positive behaviors in school, such as keeping a clean work area, walking in the hallways without disrupting others, being helpful, etc.

They often vie for jobs in the classroom, which are rotated every three weeks, because they love being responsible for something.

However, I want to help them become financially literate by allowing them to earn "classroom cash" based on our school-wide behavior management tool and the jobs they do in our classroom. This classroom cash will be used to purchase items from our "class store", which will be positioned on our Store-It-All Teaching Center. Students will be able to save money in order to purchase erasers, Smencils, stamps, toys, coloring books, bracelets, and miscellaneous items that I already have in our class.

My students will learn firsthand that we have to work hard in order to get the things we want. They will also learn about the importance of saving for big ticket items. In turn, I hope this will help them appreciate everything their parents do for them a little bit more.
