Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school band program was dying and I was hired to pick up the pieces and grow the program back to prominence. We have grown from 5 to 120 in just two years. My students are African-American and Latino in an inner-city, socioeconomically depressed area.
Our school was opened to give students of color the opportunity to have a superior education and lift them, along with the neighborhood, up.
In the first decades of the school's opening, the band became one of the most noted in the nation. Many Jazz greats began in our school. However, as drugs and budget cuts hit the school and community, the band program began to suffer. We are dedicated to bringing our band program back to the prominence it once enjoyed and give our students experiences in all types of music; classical, jazz, and popular. These students are dedicated to our quest and have grown the band in size and ability in a short amount of time. We are now focusing on replacing worn and broken instruments and adding new to help the band flourish.
Our students are currently enjoying concert band, jazz band, and popular music studies.
My Project
Granite Blocks are a specialty percussion instrument used in many pieces of concert band literature. They make a specific sound many composers are looking for - a sound similar to wood blocks but they have 5 different pitches (wood blocks only have one). In order for us to be able to perform more advanced music, we need to procure a set so we may perform at our concert band evaluation performance. These are very durable and will be able to be used for many, many years and for many different genres of music. Getting these Granite Blocks here would be extremely helpful to our music program!
