My Students

We currently have approximately 310 students attending fifth through eighth grade at SV Middle School in Newport. ME. Our current school curriculum requires all students in fifth and sixth grade, approximately 160 kids, to participate in General Music classes. Students in fifth through eighth grade may elect to take chorus, band, show chorus, and jazz band. Nearly fifty percent of students at our school take advantage of these electives and enjoy participating.

Many students ask to learn piano and guitar.

This year we are going to make that happen!

My Project

SV Middle School will be adding Modern Band to the music curriculum this coming school year. It teaches kids to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, R & B and other modern styles. Modern Band classes feature guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, technology, and computers. With the help of “Maine Kids Rock,” an initiative sponsored by the Maine Department of Education and “Little Kids Rock,” we will be receiving instrument credits, curriculum, and teacher trainings. However, due to the high number of students we have in our music classes, we will not have enough instruments for all students. Music instrument instruction is best achieved hands-on. It’s important that every student be able to have an instrument in-hand during instruction. With your help, we can fund the remaining guitars we need to help our program be successful and allows our students to ROCK!
