This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Benjamin Britten said “Music does not excite until it is performed.” When my students get up on stage to perform for a full audience, I want them to walk away feeling like they have done their best!
We are a Title I, inner-city school in Connecticut.
Many of our students are bilingual, learning English as a second language and 100% of the student body receives free breakfast and lunch. We have a very supportive administration and a wonderful team of teachers, all of which encourage our students to participate in the music program. We have a ukulele program, thanks to the generous donations from Donors Choose, and we have a 115 member band program from grades 4-8. My students love music and it plays a huge role in school, social, and home lives.
My Project
Every year our music program is provided with the essentials; strings, oil, reeds, and repairs. My goal is to bring our musicianship to a new level. My students will be able to sign out these tuners and learn where their instrument naturally tunes. They will learn how to improve intonation outside of the classroom through practice and experience. Tuning, in a middle school band, is always a challenge, and proper tuning will bring new life to the music they are performing. My ukulele students are dying to be able to learn how to tune their instrument on their own without having to share my one tuner.
A lack of funding should never prevent a child from experiencing a full, well rounded education, and that includes music education!
My students need these tuners to have an individualize tuning experience to bring their musicianship to a higher skill level.
