This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Education is our passport to our future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today" -Malcolm X Technology is taking over the world, and my students are ready to do just the same!
My 5th-graders attend a low-income school in an urban setting.
Approximately 700 students attend the elementary school where I teach. Many of them come from low-income, single family homes. My 23 students are English language learners and many of them have learning disabilities. But, regardless of their limitations they have one thing in mind, and that is to one day attend college. My students are very hard working, and they try their very best every day! But, unfortunately our school currently doesn't have the funds to purchase new computers for our classrooms. There is a computer lab that is currently under construction and my students have not had access to the lab this entire school year. The one computer we have in the classroom doesn't work. It's tough when I assign research projects, or they want to read books online, practice typing among other things and there is only one computer that sometimes works.
My Project
I am requesting two chromebooks for our technology center in our classroom. As 5th graders, they are expected to do some research for projects and technology plays a big role with the new common core standards. The new state testing is now being taken using a computer. Technology needs to be incorporated in thier daily learning experince in order to better prepare them for higher learning. My students need these chromebooks for research, typing, book reading, testing among other things. These chromebooks will be extremely helpful to have in my classroom. My students will be able to access them on a daily basis in groups of two. During independent work time and workstations, there will be a specific time designated for my students to use technology. Online reading will increade their reading level, all students will practice their typing skills and they will now have a chance to be exposed to surf the net and explore many amazing websites that will help their education.
