My students need high interest informational and literary texts at their independent reading level.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a low socio-economic school where most of my students predominantly speak Spanish. My students are at varying levels of academic ability. Some students read at a kindergarten level and up while a few students read at a fourth grade level.
A plethora of our parents are not in a position to afford school supplies for their children, but value their child's education.
Many of their parents work two jobs and have a difficult time taking them to the library to get books on their reading levels. In most cases, their parents are Spanish speaking and can not read with them at home.
Several of my students have a learning disability and lack confidence in reading. I would like for them to develop a love of reading.
My Project
Imagine going to school in a new country, with new procedures, new rules, a new language, a plethora of new students, and brand new teachers! Well, that's what life is like for several of my students who are from Puerto Rico,Mexico and Cuba.
At the very least, I should provide high interest reading materials on their levels.
These materials such as Time for Kids and some fiction titles will hook them into reading and help them learn about the identical, every day topics we're studying in our classroom. Currently, the materials we have don't meet the needs of our English Language Learners. Instead of having bilingual students or bilingual aids translate the text that our students are required to know about, they can read text related to the subject area on their own independently.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
