Our students are beginning to love to read. As 9th graders, often they aren't interested in reading books but we're trying to teach them. So, we've built in independent reading three times a week in our Humanities class, a combination of English & Social Studies, to help our students nurture their love of reading.
Our school is a community school in New York in a high-need area. We have little funding to purchase additional books for our classroom library to keep it up-to-date with interesting reads for our students. Most of our students don't have books at home or the funds to purchase books on their own.
"Twilight. Do you have it?" Our students keep asking for Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn as well as other current, interesting books. They talk amongst each other about how much they love the books and how "You have to read them!" Many of our students beg us to borrow the books to take home, try to sneak in reading in other classes, and overall are beginning to blossom into great readers. However, we can't afford to buy these books and neither can our students.
In order to help our students to keep reading, we need more books. Many of the books in our classroom library are not interesting to our students as they cannot connect to their own lives. Our students wrote a list of all the books they want for our library, so these requests are from them. They beg us to get more books and with these new books, they will continue to develop good reading skills and increased literacy.
Your help with ensure that our students are able to continue to develop a love of reading and have an opportunity to read the latest, most interesting books. They are beginning to love reading and with your help, they can keep reading and understand how important it is to develop good reading skills and read for fun.
