Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Would you be able to write a story if I gave you a rock and a chisel? Would you even want to try? That is what I am essentially giving my students as they learn to become independent writers.
My school is in one of the poorest and most violent cities in Southern California.
My students are all English language learners. All of the school qualifies for free lunch, and the majority of the students live at or below the poverty level. Many of our students have parents who are incarcerated or deceased. Despite having multiple odds stacked against them, they still come to school eager to learn.
My Project
Although we aren't quite using slate and chisels, the paper my students are given to write on is completely outdated. The lines are so big that no first grader will be able to correctly form the letters of our alphabet. I have used the materials I am requesting in the past, and have had much success. The pencils are the developmentally appropriate size for these five and six year old children.
Having the appropriate materials to develop our writing skills has a huge impact on my students' learning.
They feel successful and important when I'm able to proudly display their work on our classroom walls. Additionally, the paint will enable us to create beautiful works of art!
