This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in an inner city school in which more than 80% of the students are eligible for free lunch. My students are primarily English Language Learners and they work hard throughout the year to improve their reading and writing skills.
This year ('07-'08) my class improved their reading and writing skills dramatically. However, we used paper that was put into a folder. Often times their work was mistakenly thrown out, or somehow lost. It would be wonderful for my '08-'09 class to have a Writing Journal that they could use throughout the year, so that they could see their progress. The Writing Journals have lines that are "just right" for first graders and room for pictures too! The Writing Journal Center will allow the children to keep their journals accessible and neatly stored.
My first graders need Daily Writing Journals that are "just right" for them. This will allow them to see their work progress throughout the year, instead of having scattered papers in a folder. Studies show that improvements in reading and writing go hand in hand. With New York city budget cuts, this resource will not be possible without your support.
Your generosity will allow my students to write every day and see how much their writing improves throughout the year. They can showcase both their writing, labeling and drawing abilities. At the end of the year they bring home a "prized possession" that is sure to be treasured for years to come!
