We Want to Write and Perform in a Play and Make Movies Too!

My students need paint and backdrop supplies, doctor, animal, and circus costumes, markers, pencils, paper, circus supplies, and poster board for our school play.

My Students

Every year my class loves to write and perform in a play based on their favorite book. This year, my class will be focusing on a wonderfully endearing book called, The One and Only Ivan. It tells the story of how an elephant and a dog help save a baby elephant's life in captivity.

I teach a fantastic group of twenty-nine fifth grade students in sunny southern California.

My school won the California Distinguished School Award because we integrate the arts into our academic studies. Our school is a Title I school, and over 48% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. I teach a mix of gifted students and autistic students, and lots of wonderful children in between. It is a tremendous amount of work writing your own play, but it is a fantastic way to transform a story into a play, and adapt it so our entire class gets speaking roles. It's a great feeling working on a play and thinking of new dialogue and characters you can add to make the play even better! My students will make all of the background sets, audition for roles in the play, practice their lines with great emotion and body movement. The culmination of their hard work is performances for the entire school, parents, and our community.

My Project

I have requested backdrop supplies and paint so my students can make their own backdrops for the various scenes in the play. I have also requested clown, elephant, dog, and ringmaster costumes and banners for our circus scenes in the play. I have also requested doctor's outfits and lab coats so we can portray concerned doctors at the zoo who adopt the wonderful elephants and take them out of their small home so they can join the other zoo animals. My students will also be working with clay this year so I requested 100 pounds of clay so they can make cups and bowls. The markers and pencils will be used to make their cut paper animated films based on our science or social studies lessons. The markers will also be used to illustrate their books. What a wonderful year of focused creativity mixed in with our academics! This is how my students will take the information they learn during the year and end up with their own products and performance for their culminating project

My students need these resources so they can work on their sets and their play for many months. They also need the clay so they can build and glaze their own bowls or mugs. There will be a lot of drawing this year when my students make their cut paper animated films and when they illustrate their books.
