We Want to Visit Our Local River and Test the Water!
My students need a bus to take them to the Los Angeles River so they can collect water samples to study and learn how to protect our river from pollution.
This school year, my students are focusing their STEM learning on our local watershed because they want to protect our rivers and ocean from pollution. What better way to experience our local river than by visiting it and collecting water samples for pollution testing back in our classroom?
I teach a fun and excited group of fifth grade students in sunny Southern California.
Last year, over 48% of the students at my school qualified for free or reduced price lunch. Our school focuses on teaching the students to be stewards of our environment. We have organic gardening in raised beds, and the fifth graders focus their scientific studies on our local watershed.
As part of our science curriculum, our fifth grade students love to learn about protecting our watershed from pollution! We visited a community two hours away and saw their clean oceans, but now we want to experiment and bring our learning closer to home at our local river.
My Project
The best way to learn about protecting our local river is to visit it and take water samples. Besides looking at the plants and animals that live at our river, my students will be listening to experts explain ways that the environment near the river can be transformed so that pollution does not enter the river after a heavy rain.
Our class needs a bus to take us to our local river so we can experience the beauty of it (and the pollution) in person. We will bring another fifth grade class with us so they can learn about the river and its environment and share this information with the other students at our school.
Your donation to this project will help our class visit our local river and learn about its beauty firsthand.
We will also take water samples from a few different locations so we can look for living organisms and run some tests on the water to see if it is clean or polluted.
