We Want to Throw Our Clay!

My students need one pottery wheel to create pottery using the throwing method of working with clay.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Garcia's classroom raised $869

This project is fully funded

I teach art to students in grades pre-kinder through fifth at an elementary school that is on an army post. My students are the children of active duty military parents. They move schools often and many of them have a parent that is deployed.

Since the life of a military child can be very stressful for so many reasons, I aim for the art room to be a fun place where the students are able to relax and express their feelings through their artwork. We are very excited to have a new kiln this year. I am able to teach my students creative problem solving with clay through a variety of hand building techniques. As my students learn to express and execute their ideas in clay, I wish to expose them to the process of throwing clay on the potters' wheel. This would be a wonderful new and exciting experience that they are not likely to get anywhere else. The repetitive motion of the potters' wheel is very soothing for children. Often the students that struggle in the regular core subjects find their special talent in the art room and this becomes the place where they succeed. Clay is a great medium that teaches students to adapt to change as they explore their ideas.

A pottery wheel would complete our clay studio. We do not have a lot of space, so one small wheel is about all that we could make room for. Since I taught advanced ceramics for years, this is my area of expertise and I long to bring this experience to my students. I found this beginner potters' wheel by Boss that has all the basics that we need to get started. The great thing about it is that it can inspire students creativity for years and years to come!

You will make it possible for my students to have this new experience that will build self-esteem and skills that will carry over far beyond the walls of my classroom.
