We need rechargeable batteries to run calculators and other data collection devices.
FULLY FUNDED! Coach Case's classroom raised $260

About My Students
I have the most wonderful students. Many of my students come from homes that do not have access to technology. When they get to use current data collection devices and graphing calculators, they feel empowered. Exposing students in high poverty helps them grow and explore beyond family tradition.
Students started a battery recycling program several years ago since our school uses over 2000 batteries a year. These batteries go to the calculators and data collectors in math and science classrooms.
Last year, students received a grant to purchase a classroom set of rechargeable batteries. They kept tract of how many fewer disposable batteries were purchased AND recycled. One classroom set of rechargeable batteries saved about 400 disposable batteries from being purchased, used and disposed. The annual cost savings is about $180.
Students wanted to outfit another classroom with rechargeable batteries and further save resources and money for the school.
The school owns a set of rapid recharge stations for this type battery.
Students are developing stewardship and resource conservation skills. Students continue to develop data collection and analysis skills by monitoring battery purchases and recycling. Students are understanding and developing the concept of value and wise decision making by researching the type of battery to replace disposable batteries. Students are developing public speaking skills by training teachers how to use the recharging station and instructing students how to care for this type battery.
In Their Own Words
Our team has two goals for this project.
1) We want to save the school money. Each time we get rechargeable batteries for the school, we save at least $180 a year. This figure will grow each year and with each set we buy.
2) We want kids to start thinking about saving energy and money. Rechargeable batteries saves energy because we don't have to buy and get rid of disposable batteries.
Our energy team will be teaching the teacher that gets these batteries how to check if the batteries are needing to be charged, how to charge them, how to care for the batteries and the charging station.
We will be talking to the kids in the classes why we need to change to rechargeable batteries and how much money it saves.
We hope kids will start understanding how rechargeable batteries work and then use them at home too.
Our school sent over 200 pounds of batteries to the recycle station last year. We want to cut that in half. Disposable batteries have harmful chemicals like lead, mercury and lithium. When they get wet, they leak. Those chemicals get into the ground water and gets into the water we drink.
We want to save money, the environment and energy with this project.
