Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How difficult would it be for you to go to school in a location that spoke a foreign language? This is what my wonderful first graders have been dealing with this year. They are all English Language Learners and are struggling to master our language with very few resources.

Our school is an inner-city school in Southern California.

The entire population qualifies for free lunch. Many of our students struggle with poverty, family difficulties, and lack of permanent housing. It is a frequent occurrence to hear police helicopters circling our playground at recess time. The students are exposed to crime and adult issues that no first grader should be.

My Project

The items I have requested will help my students in several ways. The headphones with microphones will increase their language acquisition and reading fluency by allowing them to hear themselves reading and completing computer activities. The whiteboards will enable me to monitor individual responses in a group setting. The listening library will provide the students with appropriate books to hear as they read along. Finally, the various types of paper will give us choices of how to display all of the wonderful writing that is inevitable with all of our hard work! Writing and illustrating are fantastic tools to help the students with our goals.

In addition to the reasons I have already mentioned, having a project funded shows my students that there are people with resources their families may not possess who want to help others.

Although these students aren't able to give to others now, these types of opportunities will hopefully encourage them to give back in the future.
