My classroom is specially designed for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. While all of my students have significant impairments in language, cognitive ability, and motor skills, they continue to work hard and produce great work both academically and artistically.
I teach at a wonderful school in Alabama that focuses on empowering students to develop leadership skills.
Over 75% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, making us a low income school. Within this low income, high need environment, I teach students with severe special needs. My students strive to participate in the general education environment to the best of their abilities, including a desire to have their work showcased in our hallway, just as their non-disabled peers.
My Project
Using the large bulletin board and border trimmers, we will create a work display area in our hallway to post academic and artistic work done by students throughout the year. My students really enjoy seeing art pieces they created showcased for others to enjoy. Students will participate in designing and creating displays pertaining to things we have learned about in the classroom.
With the printed board paper, we will create a display of my students climbing mountains and succeeding in the challenges along the way.
Having work displayed creates a sense of pride and shows how important the work the students produce is to the members of the school.
Students will learn that they are an important piece of our school culture, and the effort they put in to assignments matters.
