My Students
I have wonderful students that are committed to learning. They need constant support and encouragement to keep pushing through. I do my best for them every single day and as eager as they are to learn and explore I don't always have the necessary tools on hand for them. If I did, I know without a doubt that these kids would take advantage. It is vital that these student have more access to literature especially fiction.
We have a curriculum that strongly supports non-fiction for our students but it is vital that they have access to fictional texts as well.
For Silent Sustained Reading on Fridays, there is a huge shortage of books in my classroom and my students are really hungry to engage as they pull whatever they can off my bookshelves. We could really use some classic titles to put on these shelves. According to College Board there are over 100 texts that college bound students should have read or should be reading and when I surveyed my seniors on average the had only read 2-3 through out their h.s. careers. please help us out!!! thank you in advance!
My Project
My seniors are at an incredible disadvantage as they have not been exposed to a lot of literature in the past few years in high school. It has a lot to do with the push for informational texts. When I went on College Board however, the site has a 100 texts that college bound students should have read and they are the classics. When I surveyed my students on average they have read 2-3 titles on that list. What I am trying to do is give them more exposure to these texts so they don't continue to fall behind. They deserve the chance to step into college on equal footing with their peers from across the country that have had much more exposure to these stories. On Fridays we do Silent Sustained reading for 45 minutes so that they can spend time perusing the titles and reading them and engage in academic dialogue that will give them the kind of practice they need for the college classroom . Please help my students knock some titles off that list!
