My Students
Have you ever felt left out or that you just couldn't keep up with the people around you? This is the problem facing several of my students this year.
My students are a great group of 4th graders from a rural town in Pennsylvania.
They love having fun, but know how to get work done. Despite all of my hard work and the implementation of the new Daily 5 reading program, many continue to struggle with the very basics of reading.
Reading is a skill they will need throughout the rest of their lives, and expectations in reading are higher than they have ever been before with the onset of the new national Common Core. Through this project, I hope to help my students expand their vocabularies, increase their fluency, and ultimately develop a life-long passion for reading!
My Project
This year in 4th grade I have numerous struggling readers and students with special needs in my classroom. In the past, these students were not in my classroom when I conducted book clubs and literature circles. This meant that since the remaining students were at or above level, 4th- and 5th-grade-level book sets worked perfectly.
This year the schedule is a little different, so I have had to make some adjustments. I prepared some sets of lower reading level books, but then one of my struggling readers specifically said to me, "I want to read what they're reading!" I realized that I didn't want students' book choices to be limited by their reading levels, and I would love to be able to offer audio books as a solution.
This listening center will give students access to books that may have been too challenging otherwise.
It will give my struggling and low-level readers a chance to take an active role in book clubs in my classroom. The audio books will be perfect for independent reading time and can help ALL students build their vocabulary and fluency. My goal in 4th grade is to help foster a life-long love of reading in my students, and these resources will be one tool to help me do just that!
