Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are being raised in single parent households; some are in foster care. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch based on the socioeconomic status of our school population.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students are motivated to learn!
Many of my students are one to two years below reading level and are receiving intensive interventions in my classroom. However, with these interventions and individualized guided reading lessons, my students feel empowered to reach their full potential this year. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I know with your help, we can reach our goals.
My Project
My students are eager to read more books independently. Right now they are allowed 2 books in their desk at one time. They don't have the room in their desks to have any more than that. However, my students are so eager to read, they want to be able to sign out more books from our classroom library. Our school literacy coach suggested using seat pockets as a way for my students to safely store up to 5 books at a time. Having the seat pockets will allow my students to have a variety of independent reading materials on hand.
