My Students
Do you remember when you were in school and the new edition of a reader came in? That was my favorite time! I am constantly scouring the newspapers and magazines for science articles and copying them for students. I want my students to hold the actual publication that articles were printed in!
My students are great!
Yes, they face challenges but they are meeting them head on. Our school is in the bottom 5% of under-performing schools, yuck! We are a dedicated teaching staff that chooses to work hard to help students that fall into one of many undesirable categories.
Many of my students do not read at grade level. Their native language is not English, they are homeless, live in homes with 10 or more people, and often do not eat enough. When they walk into my classroom, I will not allow these things to define them nor allow it to shape their education. We are at school to get business done.
My Project
I am asking for two different science weekly readers to engage my students in reading. Students need current sources for science reading. Yes, we could read a textbook. I want to use a monthly publication to increase students' desire to read more outside of the classroom. You and I both know how we look forward to our monthly magazine subscription to arrive so we can sit and flip through it to find out what is new in the magazine world. I want my students to look forward to reading each month! Not to be selfish, but I want it to revolve around SCIENCE!
My project is important because my students do not have exposure to pleasure scientific reading sources.
When you fund this project, you can think about kids reading scientifically each month out of a fun and engaging source. We will be using the magazines to increase reading time, gather new scientific information, and to engage in interactive conversations.
Thank you for your supporting our reading goals and desires.
