My Students

The students I have the privilege of working with are from culturally diverse backgrounds. They are our community's future thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, and leaders. Unfortunately, most of them face challenges outside of school and do not always have the opportunity to participate in and practice 21st Century Skills. My goal is to change that!

We encourage one another to persevere and never stop trying.

As a teacher, I create an inviting, comfortable atmosphere within our classroom walls to allow my students to feel confident to take chances, try new things, and make mistakes in order to grow as learners. I love when I overhear my students say," let me help" or "have you tried to do it this way?" or " thanks, that's a great idea". We work hard at listening and respecting each other.

This awesome group of learners love projects and to be challenged every day. They work in groups a lot of the time, which enables them to solve problems, look at things from another point of view, and practice communication skills. I am guiding them to become life-long learners.

My Project

This year I am teaching 4th and 5th grade Reading/English Language Arts. I am very excited about this and am looking forward to the challenge of not only having two grade levels but also different reading levels within those grades. My students and I are eager to read and interact with novels.

One way to teach critical thinking skills is to have children interact with novels using quality lessons.

The materials I am asking for are rigorous lessons for different novels. Since the students will be in rotating reading groups, I will have multiple novels being read at the same time. I want to ensure that I am devoting my time with the students modeling my love of reading. I want to use these lessons as a spring board to critical thinking skills and digging deeper into the meanings of complex text. I know I fell in love with books because a teacher taught me how to really read a book and have deep discussions with others. I dream of doing that for my students.
