My Students
“It is becoming increasingly clear through research on the brain, as well as in other areas of study, that childhood needs play. Play acts as a forward feed mechanism into courageous, creative, rigorous thinking in adulthood.” - Tina Bruce
My classroom is comprised of 6 teenagers with moderate to severe disabilities.
Every student in my class has been diagnosed with autism, due to this my students struggle with having appropriate peer relationships. My students have difficulty with processing, and using social cues. My students often face challenges with making and maintaining friendships.
Our school is a specialized public school in Staten Island, New York dedicated exclusively to teaching special needs children. The materials requested will not only benefit my current class, but any group of students I may have the privilege of teaching in the future.
My Project
My students require various materials that are adapted to their deficits in fine and gross motor actions. Materials such as Easy-Grip Ball Toss, Partner Parachute Kit, Bean Bag Board, and Egg and Spoon Race Game will encourage the partner play... which simply can not be done without the requested materials.
My students require assistance when participating in age appropriate leisure activities. If provided with the requested materials, my students will display decreased anxiety, behavioral problems, and most importantly an increase in self esteem.
My teenage learners with autism deserve the opportunity to have the materials necessary to facilitate appropriate peer interactions.
The materials requested will assist students and staff when organizing peer to peer interactions through social play.
