My students need books about Chicago for social studies and reading.
FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Rose Malinowski's classroom raised $503
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income/high-poverty urban school district. Their experiences are limited. They face with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and 99% receive free lunch and breakfast.
My students are 70% Hispanic and 30% African-American. I have several English Language Learners (ELLs) and also Special Education students in my classroom. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.
My Project
The social studies standard for our state include learning about Chicago. I would like resources to be able to engage my students in non-fiction and fiction literature.
The more books I can provide for my students to learn about Chicago, the better they will be immersed in the topic.
My students rarely leave their neighborhood, so these books will be introducing the students to their own city. I recognized this when I read about a beach and many of the students did not know we had a beach in Chicago. These books, along with videos and other resources, will help my students learn about Chicago.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
