This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in the Inwood section of Manhattan. 70% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. The generosity of my students and their families does not cease to amaze me. In October, our school community raised over $6,000 in a walk-a-thon to support children's cancer research. By the end of November, my class met the challenge of reading 100 books. Because of that accomplishment, Scholastic Book Company donated 100 books to a needy organization. My students are very caring and have a desire to help others. They participated in a clothing drive for the needy and we'll be doing a penny drive in January to benefit another childhood cancer fund. Now, they want to read another 100 books, to help save the rain forest.
When my students were given the opportunity to read 100 books, so that 100 books would be donated elsewhere, they met the challenge enthusiastically! Not only were they helping themselves to become better readers, they were helping others. They were so excited to count (and color a heart) for each book read. Scholastic is now offering us a chance to help save the rain forest. If my class reads 100 books by Earth Day, Scholastic will make a donation to help save the rain forest. What I need to keep my students reading is new additions to the classroom library. They have read so much already...I want to keep them hooked on reading. Books that are on a higher level will keep them interested as their reading levels increase. New books will light the spark for them!
My class needs leveled books as their reading level improves. Once they've read all of the books on Level 'D', for instance, they're ready for Level 'E'. My classroom library does not have a lot of books higher than Level 'D'. We are in need of books at levels above 'D' because my students' reading levels have all increased since September. They need some new challenging books! At the same time, we'll be counting the number of books read and helping to save the rainforest when we've read 100 books. You can make this a reality!
Your generosity will allow my students to read higher level books as their reading improves. You will help them reach their goal of reading 100 books for the Scholastic Book Challenge. Scholastic will donate money to save the rain forest if we can read 100 books. You will make my students feel that as young as they are, they can make a difference in the world!
