We Want To Grow Our Own Vegetables Too

My students need an indoor greenhouse, 30 individual greenhouse windows and a theme box that contains materials and manipulatives explaining how plants grow.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Thompson's classroom raised $331

This project is fully funded

My two colleagues and I teach a total of 30 special needs preschoolers in a high risk and needs urban public school area in Virginia. Because of various environmental issues we are unable to grow a garden outside of the school. As teachers, we want to help the children understand and appreciate the life cycle and the earth.

All children feel successful when they are able to know they made or grew something themselves, especially preschoolers. Every year, we talk about fruit, vegetables and flowers growing. We read books, watch videos and go to a local nursery and garden. We plants seeds and watch them sprout. We would love to transplant them outside but we run into many obstacles. Our plant area is often destroyed by weather, people or other environmental forces. The children are never able to see their plants really grow. We are never able to taste our vegetables because they never survive. We would love the opportunity to watch and document with pictures and photographs our plants growing from seed to plant. We have tried to send the small plants home but many of the plants fail to thrive.

How can our plants receive the much needed sun during the day and survive our environmental surroundings until the next school day? We feel that if we could have some type of portable greenhouse, we would be able to bring the greenhouse into the classroom when the school is closed. The preschoolers would be able to learn and experience the full growth process. All of the children would be able to see the plants thrive. The project could be expanded with the help of the gardening theme activity box. Lastly, we may be able to taste something that we have grown ourselves.

This spring we hope to have a small garden that survives obstacles. We hope to taste the "vegetable or mini fruits" of our labor. You can help by donating to our cause.
