We Want to Catch-Up, But More Importantly Move-Up!
I need professional development training to help strengthen diverse learners' foundational reading skills so they can reach and exceed their reading grade levels, and be successful and confident life-long learners.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has created an environment where students are encouraged to take ownership and accountability of their learning. Every child has their own strengths and areas needing improvement, and access to the appropriate resources are just what they need in order to make tremendous growth. The students in all three of the classes I co-teach in always put forward their full efforts to be better learners. They care about their education and strive to be the best citizens they can be.
I have been given an opportunity to teach students in a resource setting where they can intensively focus on their foundational reading skills: phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Overall, I teach a total of 17 diverse learners in both inclusion and resource settings from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade classes. Of those, 16 are language learners, and several also receive speech, social work, and occupational therapy services. I have 10 diverse learners from all grade levels who are still emergent readers (reading at a kindergarten/ first grade level).
Their motivation, hardworking, and positive attitudes have continuously fueled me to always be the best educator I can be!
My Project
Majority of the diverse learners I teach are emergent readers. This means that they are still developing early-childhood reading behaviors and/or reading similarly to their younger peers in pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade. As they continue to move on to higher grade levels, their achievement gap further increases as they face even more challenging tasks. My diverse learners end up playing "catch-up" throughout their entire academic experience.
By helping fund this professional development training, I will be able to provide diverse learners research-based explicit reading instruction that will greatly help them learn the foundational reading skills they need in order to improve their literacy: fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, which will overall increase their academic achievement.
I have been given the opportunity to teach students in a resource setting, where I can provide this intensive reading curriculum. This opportunity will allow them to make great strides as they not only "catch-up" to their grade-level, but will be given opportunities to move up and exceed.
A very important part of my responsibility as a Special Education teacher is to provide each diverse learner individualized lessons and activities that are appropriate to their academic and developmental needs. In order to be successful, being flexible and resourceful are the catalysts to the level of success they can achieve, and your donations will help us get there. Thank you very much in advance!
