My students are bright and enthusiastic learners who come from diverse backgrounds. Many of them do not have access to technology at home. Over 1/3 of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. My class includes second language learners, speaking a variety of different languages, and they need extra support to become proficient in English.
Our class also includes several special education students.
Many of these students need to have access to technology resources that they do not have access to at home. These students are motivated and need more individual skill practice in reading and mathematical skills. Some parents are not able to provide support, as they do not have the language, time, or academic resources to provide them assistance. My school does not qualify for Title I supplemental resources; therefore technology is limited to 1 classroom computer for 32 students and approximately 30 minutes of computer lab one time per week. My students would be extremely excited to learn and work with an iPad during the academic day.
My Project
My students love learning through interactive, hands on problem solving. These STEM kits provide multiple opportunities for my students to be able to collaboratively work as a team and solve many different problems. First grade students need to be able to touch, feel, and explore with blocks, water, magnets, and other materials with a purpose of solving various problems. Students will actively work together to find a common solution while using key learning goal vocabulary related to their science projects. They will also integrate their knowledge of many of their favorite fairy tales to solve real world problems for their favorite characters.
My students will build a love of learning, science, and engineering to last a lifetime.
