Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Third graders in a New York public school who go home to a house, apartment or shelter that has no books. This high-achieving third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but have little to no resources to do so.

When I was a child, my favorite book series was the Boxcar Children. Into my teen years, I accumulated the first 75 books in the Boxcar Children series. A few weeks ago, I decided to share my love for Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny with my students. After reading them the first book in the series, I gave my students a special gift - I brought in all 75 books in my collection for them to read and share with each other.

My childhood collection of the Boxcar Children sits in a special part of our classroom library. My students often ask me if there are any more books in the series after those I have. In fact, there were 67 books written after I stopped collecting them. My students would love to have these 67 Boxcar Children books to have a complete collection for our library.

By sharing my love for these characters with my students, I have seen an adoration for reading like I have never seen before. By making a donation to this project and allowing us to complete the collection, you are helping fuel the energy of these eight and nine year-olds, enhancing their reading abilities and helping them fall in love with characters they can relate to! Perhaps with this donation, in twenty years, these children will be sharing the Boxcar Children with their kids, and you will have made an impact on many more generations to come!
