My Students
The students I serve are 18 energetic, problem-solving, question asking, creative, hands-on diverse learners from all parts of the USA. They enjoy learning about science, technology, reading engineering, arts, and math.
The students attend and reside in a Title I school in Berkeley, MO, where Ferguson, MO is our neighboring city, site of the 2014 uprising.
All of the students receive free and reduce lunch and a few are new to the school community. Some students come from situations where there are limited incomes and opportunities for cultural experiences. Some students come from school districts that were not accreditated by the state. Two students are new to the school community this year. Only 1/3 of my students read on grade level. There is no public library or book store in the city.
They love to share ideas, experiment, solve problems, and are eager to learn new things. They like to participate in silent reading. They also love to read and learn about STREAM careers, people and concepts. I have several students who want to pursue STREAM careers.
My Project
My students need books about famous people to do comparison book studies.
It takes a village to raise a child.
It also takes a village to educate a child in the twenty-first century. Do you remember the first time you had your very own book to read? What a feeling! My students need to have that feeling at school. Many of my students have not discovered that reading can take you places.
Our community is still recovering and rebuilding from 2013 tornado damage, 2014 Ferguson and 2019 criminal activity in the school attendance area. The entire student body qualifies for free and reduced priced lunch. Therefore, families are not spending monies to purchase books. There are many factors that my students face, however, they enjoy reading and responding to reading on clipboards and dry erase boards on the carpet area.
I have requested books from the WHO WAS series to do a comparison study of Famous People. I picked these books because they are high interest and vary in reading level. Now everyone from my lowest reader to my highest can read a different book on the same topic and still complete assignments on this topic of study such as book reports, comprehension test, creating timelines, identifying character traits and cite evidence to prove the trait, summarizing each chapter or book, making bottle people of the main characters, and designing a diorama of their favorite part of the book. These books will also be utilized in Social Studies and many of the people have STREAM influences.
