Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a vibrant Special Education High School community with special needs students who have many physical disabilities. Students 12 to 21 years old and their families live in the Heart of Harlem New York or surrounding neighborhoods. Over half of the student population are English as New Learners (ENLs) and the entire population are Students with Disabilities.

One of our greatest challenges is providing access for our students who utilize wheelchairs for mobility. My goal is to insure every student is able to increase their independence regardless of handicapping conditions.

That is why our STEM Team needs robotic and coding equipment. We need to provide students with tools to transition successfully to the "real world" where they need to compete with ambulatory peers.

My Project

Robotic engineering provides disabled students access opportunities to communicate with the entire population . Our idea is to build a robotic component that allows our students to access materials independently allowing the expression of needs and wants increasing independent decisions. This process will build self-confidence and self-reliance in our students. Our students communicate in various modalities and part of their processing is to internalize their surroundings in terms of rhythm. The musical rhythm becomes a code for the students and a language they can understand. The robotics will serve as an access point building to increase communication as the students “code” their own language. The robotics and coding equipment will complement the Assistive devices now being utilized to propel us further into the 21st century applied sciences using STEM.
