I teach the fifth grade at a charter school. Our school teaches character education to our students. In my class as we are reading the books that are requested ("Hatchet" and "The River"), we talk about how the characters in the book show good character. I feel that this helps the students understand the importance of reading and noting that how people act can effect others. Our school feels that it is just as important to teach the soft skills as it is the required skills.
The obstacle that we face in our classroom is the availability of the books. We often do not have enough and students have to share books. This can be a challenge when we are taking an open book quiz or if the students want to read at home.
The resources that I have requested are additional books to ensure that all students can have their own copy to read from. Many of the books that I have have been repaired due to many years of usage.
Having enough books will allow there to be more opportunities for all students to read the assigned reading. Receiving the requested books will also benefit the students as many of them need to take books home to read so that they can comprehend the story more clearly.
By donating the books to my classroom you will ensure that all students have the opportunity to read and study the requested books. I lead a very literature based classroom, and the students learn to love and enjoy many kinds of literature. The books "Hatchet" and "The River" are enjoyed by both boys and girls, something that can be a challenge at the fifth grade level.
