As a teacher in a rural town supported by a state university, I see a diverse blend of students. Some are native to our state, while others, visiting from halfway around the world, are enrolled with us while their parents work as visiting scholars. Many languages and cultures are represented in my middle school of almost 900 students.
Reading and literacy skills bind us together.
Together, we read popular young adult books and classic literature. We write about our experiences and our reactions to what we read. It is through these interactions that we learn that, maybe, we are not so different after all.
My Project
My role as a 6th and 7th grade reading teacher continues to evolve. I have recently begun working with middle school students with dyslexia or other specific reading disabilities during part of my day. Reading difficulties are certainly not new and research shows that up to 20% of the population may have some form of dyslexia. The ongoing pandemic has made crystal clear just how much these students struggle when they must work independently. To better equip them with independent reading skills, these students work with me in an Orton-Gillingham approved curriculum for one class period a day, five days a week. This is in addition to their traditional Language Arts class. I have already seen a shift in their confidence as readers! I would like to purchase materials to use in lessons and to beef up my classroom library with titles that will further support my students’ current guided reading needs as well as their transitions into independent readers. My students deserve materials designed just for their level.
This project would provide carefully-selected titles for students participating in reading classes.
These titles, such as Doctor De Soto and Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, are recommended for comprehension lessons in the approved curriculum that I use. For many titles, I have been able to secure a single copy from the school library or through my own purchases, but I do not have enough copies for each student. I would like to give them the opportunity to follow in their own copies to encourage full participation. Extra copies of books and multi-sensory materials would also allow me to send supplies home if students are required to work from home for any length of time.
