We the People: Preparing for Constitution Day and After

My students need 300 copies of the US Constitution as part of a history unit, to celebrate Constitution Day, and to understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

My Students

The opening phrase of the US Constitution says it all: "We the People". And yet so many students are disenchanted, disengaged, and disenfranchised. They learn about the Constitution in the abstract but don't really believe it applies to them.

My students are an incredibly diverse group at a small, urban school.

They can be energetic and eager but also fragile and easily discouraged. They want to have hope in their future but are wary of disappointment. Our school is a community of learners that reaches out and supports each other and makes the most of what we have.

My Project

Every year we teach about the US Constitution on Constitution Day, and it is part of the history curriculum, but it always seems to be something that is studied rather than lived. If students had their own personal Constitution copies, they would more readily see the applications of the document to their own lives. My plan is to organize a school-wide event on Constitution Day to celebrate the Constitution and to provide students with copies that they then would use every year in each history course. This will allow them to understand the ideals that America was built on but also to evaluate the decisions that leaders and our society have made in the past.

This will help them to see the significance of the document and also help them to take ownership of it.

They will truly see themselves as included in the idea of "We the People," with rights, and also responsibilities, for maintaining and upholding this essential document.
