We the People: Helping ELLs Understand the Constitution

My students need class sets of books that teach the history of the US Constitution and explain the concepts in the Bill of Rights.

My Students

Liberty, domestic tranquility, general welfare, and justice are all concepts outlined in the Preamble to the US Constitution that many US citizens take for granted. How can we teach these concepts to refugees who have fled countries without these concepts? Through the books I have requested!

The students I teach are all newcomers to the US from refugee camps around Asia and Africa.

All have had little to no formal schooling in their own countries or in the refugee camps they fled to. Most have little literacy in their first language so learning English is challenging for them. Nevertheless, they can and will learn with the assistance of engaging and interesting books that explain the content they must learn in subject areas.

My Project

I am requesting 3 class sets of books that explain the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is difficult for students from refugee camps to understand concepts like constitution, justice, bill of rights, freedoms of speech and assembly for they are fleeing the very countries that limit and curtail such concepts. Having resources that teach and explain these concepts at a text level they can access is extremely beneficial when they learn about them in social studies class.

Please help my students understand the concepts of "we the people", freedom, justice, assembly, and constitutional rights by donating to this project.

The students can now live by these concepts since they have fled their countries. Let's help them understand these concepts at a deeper level. Thank you.
