Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from one of the most economically distressed parts of our city. Everyday, they overcome challenges in their community, families and their individual lives. These challenges include single parent (or even "zero" parent) homes, violence, poverty and discrimination.
Despite the fact that they face many obstacles, they are determined to get the education that will lift them out of poverty and set them on the path to new horizons.
They need to have a rich background of literacy and critical thinking to successfully complete their journey.
My Project
I would like my students to read relevant, challenging literature that calls for them to actively engage with a text. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's essay, "We Should All Be Feminists" is just the sort of book that will give my students the opportunity to do this.
Adichie lays out a logical thought process that calls for a logical investigation and response.
It is the sort of reading that gives young readers an insight into the world as it is and makes them think in new ways.
I want them to questions their own beliefs about the world. I want them to discuss the relationships of men and women as they know them as well as discover what Adichie thinks these relationships should be.
